London Calling, Take II

by Lindsay Drew Wotherspoon in , ,

London is calling my name. Each time I've been there is never enough time to let it all soak in. I am always left with a feeling of wanting to do, see, eat, drink, and learn more! On my most recent trip I was able to accomplish more than the time before (that being a whirlwind visit of only thirteen hours), but nonetheless this still wasn't enough! Among the highlights this time was a visit to La Petite Maison, featured here, breakfast at The Wolseley, walking and biking through Regent Park and nearby Marylebone, and of course, perusing the high-end shopping scene at Harrods.

First up: breakfast. I love breakfast and I love it even more when I am here, dining at The WolseleyThe place to have breakfast in London these days. If you go, why not try the traditional English: Eggs any style served with bacon, sausage, baked beans, tomato, black pudding and mushrooms? Although this wasn't my pick that particular day, it was for two of my hungry dining companions. Go British or go home! The experience at The Wolseley is complete with silver tea pots and trays which might help you feel just as special as Kate Winslet who is at the table across from you. No, Kate Winslet was not sitting across from me, but she certainly could have been. The Wolseley is that kind of place. Next visit I hope to try the Champagne tea, which as shameful as it sounds I have not yet had tea in London! Dear me...

The infamous Harrods department store.

The Veuve-Clicquot Champagne bar at Harrods. Just in case shopping for Prada, Armani, and Manolos becomes too exhausting, why not stop for a flute of Veuve and lobster brochette? Mais oui!

After a day of walking and perusing the sights, jet lag inevitably settles in. In my opinion, the best way to beat this annoying state is to find a rooftop patio and get a drink! So that we did. The OXO Tower bar located on the south bank of the Thames was fantastic and offers a superb view from the eighth floor. Next visit I hope to get here when that dang jet leg sets in.

Just another door.

Walking the chic streets of Primrose.

Regent Park Pigeon, up close and personal.

Fitting...

Marylebone High Street.

A stroll through the streets of Marylebone led us to La Fromagerie, which was a very good find. It's a wonderful spot for a light afternoon lunch or stocking up on some excellent local produce.

Just one of the three walls of beautifully displayed cheese at The Fromagerie. We indulged in some Mozzarella di Bufala here that tasted so fresh it could have been shipped from Italy that morning. A not-to miss if you are a cheese lover.  Read more about this fine shop here.

Daunt Books in Marylebone: One of the most charming bookstores I've ever visited, complete with an excellent travel section.

My entrée plating at L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon.

After dining at Robuchon we needed something a little less stiff and headed for some amazing cocktails at The Soho Hotel. The Art of the Bar is definitely taken seriously in these parts.... You can actually ask for a classic Champagne cocktail and they won't look at you funny or even ask you what's in it, they'll just make it for you and it will taste divine.

Thank you London for all your culture, craziness, chaos, and class. I loved every minute and can't wait to come back for more!

Until next time.
